• Will there be carpet on the stair?
• Are you staining or painting the the risers, stringers?
• What are the floor coverings at the bottom and top of the stair?
• Usually the stair tread will match the hardwood floor, it does not need to.
• What type of stair tread materials do you want to have?

• The rail material may want to match the stair tread. 
• What type of material would you like to use for the rail?
• Oak is the most common. Most standard rails come in Maple, cherry, mahogany, brazilian cherry. Other species can be custom ordered.

• What type of rail system do you want? Post-to-Post or Over-the-Post?

Materials & Cost

The size of the rail system will directly effect the overall cost of the job.

The balusters make up the largest quantity item and have the biggest impact.

You can use the smaller balusters with the larger rails.

You can use the smaller 

2 1/4"- 6010 rail with 1 3/4" pin top balusters.

You cannot use the smaller

2 1/4"- 6010 rail with 1 3/4" square top balusters.
